Kaş, a district in Antalya, is one of the most important locations pulsating with tourism in the region. Situated at the westernmost part of Antalya, Kaş borders Demre to the east, Elmalı to the north, and is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea on the south. Directly across the water lies the Greek island of Meis. With a coastline of approximately 70 kilometers, it is one of the most vibrant tourist destinations.

Kaş has a rich history with ancient cities such as Apollonia, Isinda, Istlada, and Kyaenai. Nearby Patara was one of the most important centers of the Lydian era. Traces of Hittite civilization dating back to 2000 BC can also be found in the area.

Climate and Cuisine

The town exhibits all characteristic features of the Mediterranean climate. Summers are very hot, and winters are dry and relatively rainy. With an average annual temperature around 18 degrees Celsius and rarely dropping below 11 degrees even on the coldest days, Kaş offers a year-round travel-friendly climate.

The cuisine of Kaş will present a feast of typical Mediterranean flavors. It revolves around olive and olive oil, with dishes featuring less meat and more vegetables and herbs. Seafood is also abundant, with varieties like grouper, lobster, bonito, and dentex.

Places to Visit

Although Kaş is primarily known for its sea tourism, beautiful beaches, and sporting activities, it is also rich in historical cities. Being at the intersection of the Lycian Way and the road network, many important historical structures and ruins can be found in and around the district:

  • Xanthos Ancient City: Located 50 kilometers from the district center, this ancient city was the administrative center of Lycia. Conquered by the Persians in 545 BC, it later fell under Roman rule. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Antiphellos Ancient City: Dating back to 400 BC, this ancient city features numerous ruins and relics, including rock tombs and a 4000-seat amphitheater.
  • Aperlai Ancient City: Accessible only after a 7-kilometer hike, this city predates the Lydian period and is one of the most authentic among the ancient port cities.
  • Kaleköy Simena Ancient City: Another city inaccessible by road, it is one of the most famous ancient port cities in the world, built as a harbor city in the 4th century BC.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Demre: Known for St. Nicholas who lived in the 3rd century BC, identified with Santa Claus.
  • Saklıkent Canyon
  • Patara Beach and Ancient City: Located 60 kilometers from the district center, Patara Beach is known for its beautiful bays and as a nesting area for loggerhead turtles. The ancient city dates back to the 5th century BC with Roman-era ruins.
  • Cyprus Canyon
  • Blue Cave: Next to Kaputaş Beach, this sea cave is accessible by boat tour and offers opportunities for diving.
  • Meis Island: The nearest Greek island to Turkey, Meis was dominated by the Knights of St. John and is accessible with a Schengen visa for day trips.

The International Lycian Kaş Culture and Art Festival takes place at the beginning of July, hosting three days of exciting activities. The International Meis Swimming Race, with its 7-kilometer swimming course, also makes the region an attractive destination.

How to Get There

Kaş is located on the southwestern coast of Turkey, in the Antalya province. The nearest major airport is Dalaman Airport (DLM), approximately 150 kilometers away, offering domestic and international flights. Alternatively, Antalya Airport (AYT) is about 200 kilometers from Kaş and provides a wider range of international connections. From either airport, you can reach Kaş by rental car, private transfer, or intercity bus. Buses from major cities like Antalya, Fethiye, and Istanbul run regularly to Kaş, with comfortable coach services available. The scenic drive along the coastal D400 highway offers breathtaking views and is part of the experience. While Kaş doesn’t have a train station or airport of its own, the journey by road is rewarding and picturesque.
