Karabük, located in the heart of Anatolia, is home to some of the most stunning natural and historical landscapes in Turkey. Positioned along the historic Silk Road, this city draws travelers for both its scenic beauty and rich cultural heritage. Among its most iconic attractions is Safranbolu, a district renowned for its well-preserved Ottoman-era architecture and UNESCO World Heritage status.
At the center of Safranbolu’s historical allure is Cinci Hanı, a grand 17th-century inn that once hosted merchants and travelers along the Silk Road. Today, it serves as a boutique hotel, café, and restaurant, offering guests a unique experience that blends history and hospitality.

Who Was Cinci Hoca?
Cinci Hanı takes its name from its founder, Cinci Hoca, also known as Karabaşzade Hüseyin Efendi. A mystic healer from Safranbolu, he rose to fame in the 17th century during the Ottoman era. Known for his metaphysical abilities and association with jinns, Cinci Hoca gained royal favor after successfully treating Sultan Ibrahim in 1642, upon the invitation of Kösem Sultan. Rewarded with wealth and power, he was appointed judge of Galata and later invested in building structures in his hometown, most notably the Cinci Inn and Cinci Hamam.

Cinci Inn: An Architectural Marvel
Constructed in 1645, Cinci Hanı is an outstanding example of Ottoman caravanserai architecture. Although the architect is not definitively known, many attribute the design to Kazım Ağa, a prominent architect of the era.
The building features:
- Two stories made entirely of stone
- 63 rooms arranged behind elegant arcades
- A large central courtyard and pool
- Separate space for animals and merchant goods
- A historic iron lock and key, representing the craftsmanship of the period
Its size and features reflect its importance as a major accommodation hub along the Silk Road.

Cinci Hamam: The Ottoman Bathhouse
Not far from the inn, Cinci Hamam stands as another legacy of Karabaşzade Hüseyin Efendi. Built around the same time in the Çeşme neighborhood, this double-section bathhouse (for men and women) showcases classical Ottoman bath architecture. Like Cinci Hanı, the bath has been preserved and remains open to visitors today.
Modern-Day Experience
Today, Cinci Hanı welcomes guests from around the world as a heritage hotel, where visitors can enjoy traditional Turkish cuisine in a historical ambiance. Its location in Safranbolu makes it a central stop for those exploring the city’s Ottoman mansions, cobblestone streets, and UNESCO-listed landmarks.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an architecture lover, or a traveler looking for authentic cultural experiences, Cinci Inn and Safranbolu offer a window into the opulent world of the Ottoman past.
