Türkiye’s Geographical Indications: Local Heritage

Geographical Indications (GI) are names or signs used on products that correspond to a specific geographical location or origin, signifying a product’s unique qualities, reputation, or production methods. In the EU, these are formally categorized as PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) and PGI (Protected Geographical Indication).

GIs protect traditional knowledge, prevent imitation, and help consumers identify high-quality local products. They are especially valuable for rural economies and food sovereignty.

Türkiye’s GI Landscape

As of 2025:

  • Over 1,724 Turkish products have received national GI registration.
  • 31 Turkish products have obtained EU GI status.
  • 81 more products are under review for EU recognition.
  • Türkiye is second only to China globally in the number of registered GIs.

Some famous EU-certified Turkish GI products include:

These products are not just national treasures—they are entering and competing in the premium global food market. Full list can be accessed here.

The Economic and Cultural Value of GI Products

  • Economic Growth and Export Potential: Geographically indicated products offer substantial export advantages. For instance, GI-labeled Turkish goods exported via Metro Turkey reached 36 million euros in value in 2023. With clear origin-based branding, they attract gourmet markets abroad, especially in the EU.
  • Rural Development and Local Empowerment: GIs help safeguard local farming practices and provide economic opportunities in rural areas. They allow small producers to benefit from premium pricing and support sustainable production systems.
  • Cultural Heritage and Tourism: Each GI product tells a story about its region’s history, culture, and traditional methods. From Kayseri‘s pastırma (cured beef) to Antakya’s künefe (cheese pastry), GIs promote culinary tourism and reinforce Türkiye’s image as a food heritage destination.

Türkiye–EU Cooperation in GIs

The “Recent Developments in GIs in Türkiye and the EU” Conference held on May 15, 2025, highlighted Türkiye’s growing leadership in this space. New partnerships between the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT) and the European Commission aim to:

  • Increase EU GI registrations for Turkish products.
  • Enhance joint branding initiatives.
  • Raise awareness across European consumers.
  • Launch training and monitoring systems to improve quality compliance.

Efforts are also underway to promote Türkiye’s GI products in digital marketplaces, food expos, and international trade fairs.

Future Goals for Türkiye’s GI Strategy

  • Reach 100+ EU-registered GIs by the end of 2026.
  • Standardize branding and packaging to align with EU expectations.
  • Establish GI-focused cooperatives and producer associations.
  • Enhance visibility through gastronomy tourism and cultural diplomacy.
  • Ensure legal enforcement to protect against misuse and imitation.

Türkiye’s commitment to geographical indications reflects its dedication to preserving tradition, boosting local economies, and elevating its global food identity. With over 1,700 registered GI products and an ambitious EU strategy, Türkiye is fast becoming a global leader in premium regional food exports.

From olive oil to baklava, every GI product carries the taste of Turkish soil—and the promise of sustainable, traceable, and delicious heritage.
