Balıklıgöl: A Sacred Lake Steeped in History and Faith

Balıklıgöl, also known as the Pool of Sacred Fish, is one of the most iconic landmarks in Şanlıurfa, Turkey. Though modest in size—just 150 meters long and 30 meters wide—its religious and historical significance far outweighs its dimensions. Revered by millions, Balıklıgöl is believed to be the very site where the Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim) was miraculously saved from being burned alive by the tyrant King Nimrod.

As one of Turkey’s top destinations for religious tourism, Balıklıgöl draws large crowds year-round, with peak visitation during the holy month of Ramadan, as well as on Laylat al-Qadr, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha. The site offers not just spiritual depth but also breathtaking views, especially in the evening when the lights around the pool reflect beautifully on the water’s surface.

The Legend of Prophet Abraham and Balıklıgöl

Prophet Abraham, a central figure in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, is believed to have been born in a cave near Balıklıgöl. According to Islamic tradition, Abraham’s mother, Sare Hatun, sought refuge in this cave to protect her son from King Nimrod’s decree to kill all newborn males. Abraham was miraculously raised by gazelles until he was discovered and brought to the palace.

Despite being raised by Nimrod, Abraham grew to oppose the king’s tyranny and idol worship. He preached monotheism, and although rejected by most, Nimrod’s daughter, Zeliha, embraced Abraham’s message. In retaliation, Nimrod ordered Abraham to be burned. A pyre was built at the current site of Balıklıgöl, but by divine command, the fire turned into water and the burning logs transformed into sacred fish. Zeliha, in her sorrow, threw herself into the fire and became the nearby Zeliha Lake.

The fish in Balıklıgöl are considered holy and are never caught or consumed, adding to the sanctity of the place.
